In the U.S., even before the pandemic, 67 percent of people presenting with behavioral health disorders weren’t receiving the care they needed. In the last two years, side effects of the pandemic such as isolation and delaying care, have exacerbated the Silent Epidemic of behavioral health issues. Adults reporting anxiety and/or depressive disorder are up and the number of these adults not accessing treatment is also up. Deaths due to drug overdose are up dramatically, and suicide rates have increased in almost every state. Especially at this time and especially for our most vulnerable populations, integrating behavioral health with primary care has never been a more worthy investment. It increases access to behavioral healthcare, improves health outcomes for people with mental illness and/or substance use disorders, improves behaviors such as compliance with treatment recommendations, exercise, and diet, and reduces overall health care costs. Health inequities and escalating mental health needs are increasingly evident through the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and national turmoil. Some of the communities most affected by these public health crises are at the highest risk for not receiving mental health care. There are many reasons for this disconnect, including lack of available providers, long wait times, personal obstacles to attending appointments, and financial concerns. Digital therapeutic treatments can and do play a role in bridging gaps in behavioral health. They transcend care access limitations due to geography, socioeconomic status, trust of traditional institutions and more. They also provide a much-needed treatment alternative when typical medications and therapy are not effective for an individual patient.

Emerging treatments in behavioral health allow individuals to access care solutions when, where and how works best for them. But health insurance providers also seek to understand when it makes sense to incorporate these new treatments. This webinar delves into five key criteria for both identifying and evaluating high-quality, clinically proven digital therapeutic solutions.

Digital therapeutics expand treatment possibilities for complex behavioral health conditions. Millions of Americans with behavioral health conditions aren’t receiving needed care due to myriad barriers to care. Further, a recent Milliman analysis found individuals with behavioral health conditions are major drivers of cost in the US health care system – inflating costs by up to 6-7 times compared to non-behavioral health populations. These higher costs are largely driven by increased utilization of emergency department and inpatient stays, which often function as primary care for individuals with untreated behavioral health issues that cause or exacerbate chronic medical comorbidities. The high-cost behavioral health group in the analysis accounted for only 5.7% of the total population, yet drove 44% of total healthcare costs, with little to none spent on behavioral healthcare. The result for health insurance providers is that a small, complex population is driving millions of dollars in avoidable spending.

Behavioral health care is needed now more than ever.  Due to the nationwide shortage of psychiatrists, many individuals seek mental health care from their primary care providers, many of whom lack the capacity to manage mental health conditions due to brief appointment times and the competing demands of preventative care.  As a result, many refer patients to outside clinicians for behavioral health services.  Unfortunately, this fragmentation makes it difficult to align mental and physical health care, which can compromise patient outcomes, particularly for those with complex needs.
