U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA): Medical X-ray Imaging

Medical X-ray imaging is a widely used diagnostic tool in the healthcare system. X-rays are a form of electromagnetic radiation that can penetrate through soft tissues such as skin and muscle, allowing doctors to view bones, internal organs and other structures inside the body.

X-ray imaging is most commonly used to diagnose conditions such as broken bones, lung infections, and certain types of cancer. The procedure is generally quick and non-invasive, and it can be performed on patients of all ages.

The basic components of an X-ray imaging system are an X-ray source, which produces the X-ray beam, and a detector, which captures the X-ray images. In medical X-ray imaging, the X-ray source and detector are typically housed in a large machine called an X-ray machine or radiography system.

There are several types of X-ray imaging techniques, each with its own advantages and applications. Some common types include:

Conventional radiography: This is the most basic form of X-ray imaging and is used to capture images of bones and internal organs.

Computed tomography (CT) scans: This technique combines multiple X-ray images to create detailed cross-sectional images of the body. CT scans are used to diagnose conditions such as tumors, blood clots, and bone fractures.

Fluoroscopy: This technique uses X-rays to create real-time moving images, which can be used to guide procedures such as biopsies and the placement of medical devices.

Digital radiography (DR): This method capture X-ray images with the use of digital detectors instead of traditional film. It offers better image quality and lower radiation exposure.

Digital tomosynthesis (DTS) : its a 3D imaging technique that allows radiologists to look at the internal structures of an object without having to rotate the object.

It’s important to note that X-rays are a form of ionizing radiation, which means that it has enough energy to remove tightly bound electrons from atoms, it can damage the DNA of cells. Therefore, radiation exposure should be kept as low as reasonably achievable(ALARA principle) while still obtaining the necessary diagnostic information. Medical imaging professionals should use the lowest radiation dose required to obtain the diagnostic information needed and continually evaluate the necessity of the test to prevent unnecessary radiation exposure.

Overall, medical X-ray imaging plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of many diseases and injuries. It is a fast, non-invasive, and widely available diagnostic tool that can provide detailed images of the body’s internal structures.
