Robotic surgery, also known as robotic-assisted surgery or computer-assisted surgery, is a technology that allows surgeons to perform complex procedures with increased precision and control. It involves the use of a robotic system, which is controlled by the surgeon through a computer console, to perform the surgery. The robotic system is typically composed of a camera, robotic arms, and specialized tools that allow the surgeon to access and manipulate the surgical site.
Robotic surgery has been used in various procedures, such as prostatectomy, hysterectomy, and cardiothoracic surgery, and has been shown to offer several benefits when compared to traditional open surgery or laparoscopic surgery. These benefits include:
Increased precision: The robotic system allows for more precise movements and improved visualization of the surgical site, which can reduce the risk of complications and improve outcomes.
Reduced trauma: Robotic surgery is typically less invasive than traditional open surgery, which can result in less pain and bleeding, and faster recovery times for patients.
Greater flexibility: The robotic arms can rotate and bend in ways that are not possible with the human hand, which can allow the surgeon to access hard-to-reach areas and perform complex procedures.
Better ergonomics: The surgeon sits at a console and controls the robotic arms with hand and foot pedals, which can reduce surgeon’s fatigue, and improve the accuracy and duration of the surgery.
However, robotic surgery is not appropriate for all procedures and patient populations, and it is also important to note that it is more expensive than other surgical methods. Additionally, the use of robotic systems in surgery requires a significant investment in terms of cost and training, and the surgeon must be trained to use the robotic system and be proficient in the surgical procedures.
