Physiotherapy, also known as physical therapy, is a healthcare profession that aims to improve the movement, function, and quality of life for individuals who have been affected by injury, illness, or disability. Physiotherapists use a combination of exercise, manual therapy, and other modalities to help patients recover from conditions such as musculoskeletal injuries, chronic pain, and neurological disorders.
The physiotherapy assessment and treatment process usually begins with a thorough evaluation of the patient’s condition, including a review of the patient’s medical history and a physical examination. Based on this evaluation, the physiotherapist will develop a personalized treatment plan that may include exercises, manual therapy, and other interventions to help the patient achieve their goals. Physiotherapy sessions are usually done face-to-face, but telerehabilitation (virtual therapy) is increasingly being used as well.
Physiotherapy can be beneficial for a wide range of conditions, including:
Musculoskeletal injuries such as sprains and strains
Arthritis and other chronic pain conditions
Neurological disorders such as stroke and multiple sclerosis
Cardiopulmonary conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
Pediatrics and Geriatrics conditions.
Physiotherapists also play an important role in injury prevention, by providing education and advice on ergonomics, posture, and exercise. They also work in coordination with other healthcare professionals such as physicians, nurses, and occupational therapists to ensure the best possible outcome for the patient.
