Orthopedic surgeons, except pediatric in healthcare are specialized physicians who diagnose and treat conditions and injuries involving the musculoskeletal system, which includes bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Some specific duties of orthopedic surgeons, except pediatric in healthcare may include:
Examining patients with musculoskeletal problems and taking a medical history
Diagnosing and treating conditions and injuries involving the bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments
Performing surgical procedures to repair or reconstruct bones, joints, and other structures of the musculoskeletal system
Providing care and rehabilitation to patients with musculoskeletal conditions
Consulting with other healthcare providers, such as physical therapists, to develop treatment plans
Monitoring patients’ progress and adjusting treatment plans as needed
Staying current with new developments in the field of orthopedic surgery
To become an orthopedic surgeon, individuals must first complete a bachelor’s degree and then attend medical school to earn a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree. They must also complete a five-year surgical residency program in orthopedic surgery and pass a board certification examination. They should also have excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills, be able to work independently and as part of a team, and have good manual dexterity and physical stamina. Additionally, they should be comfortable working with technology and have an interest in staying current with the latest developments in the field of orthopedic surgery.
