Standard Occupational Classification (SOC): Interpreters and Translators

Interpreters and translators in healthcare are responsible for facilitating communication between patients, healthcare providers, and other staff who do not speak the same language. They may work in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, or other healthcare facilities, and may be employed by the facility or work on a contract basis.

Interpreters and translators in healthcare may be responsible for providing interpretation services in person or over the phone, as well as translating written documents such as medical records and consent forms. They must be fluent in both the source language and the target language and be able to accurately convey meaning and nuance between the two. In order to be successful in this role, interpreters and translators in healthcare should have excellent communication skills, cultural competency, and an understanding of medical terminology. They may also be required to hold a certification in order to practice.
