We are excited about this year’s Maternal-Fetal Imaging program presented by luminaries in our field. Designed with all learners in mind – novice to advanced – our faculty will share their vast expertise covering the hottest topics in OB/GYN ultrasound. Topics will include dating and elements of early loss, and the new AIUM detailed first-trimester practice parameter. The fetal organ systems will be covered in depth, with a comprehensive session on the fetal heart. The 2022 Gordon Conference on In Vivo Ultrasound Imaging will present the latest in diagnostic ultrasound imaging technologies and potential ultrasound imaging modes being evaluated for clinical practice. This conference focuses on the important issue of improving radiology reporting turnaround times and escalation when unexpected results are identified. The conference will explore how the development of Radiology Information Systems and PACS can support staff to ensure optimisation, support the move towards imaging networks and ensure integration of Artificial Intelligence into workflow. The concept of creating a European Society to promote education and research in the specialty of thoracic imaging emerged from a small group of European chest radiologists who met together in Grenoble in 1992. These people defined the objectives of such an organisation and the European Society of Thoracic Imaging (ESTI) was officially founded in 1993 in Luxembourg at the occasion of the founding meeting presided by Robert Dondelinger. The main activities of the Society have been concentrated on an annual meeting held in June in the country of the Society President. The scientific programmes of such meetings have included most advances in imaging techniques and scientific knowledge for chest diseases, and CME programmes have been delivered by the best European Faculty in thoracic imaging. Beyond the annual meeting the aims of ESTI include to provide recommendations and guidelines for appropriate practice in chest imaging, and to establish long-term relationships with the industry partners in order to convert technologic innovations in new clinical applications.

Policy, payment, market, operational, and technological changes are buffeting radiologists as never before; we’ll be discussing the winds of change in our Healthcare Innovation Imaging Virtual Day on Sept. 30.

Editor’s Note: Healthcare Innovation is presenting our Imaging Virtual Day next Wednesday, September 30. Next Wednesday, we’ll host national leaders among radiologists, as well as business leaders in the imaging informatics space, for a discussion on how to strategize forward around imaging informatics in this constantly shifting landscape.

There really has never been a more unsettled and unpredictable time for radiologists and radiology than now, in U.S. healthcare. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic hit our healthcare systems, radiologists were already almost uniquely in the sights of federal healthcare policymakers, who have seen diagnostic imaging procedures as exceptionally expensive, and radiologists as exceptionally highly paid for what they do, even compared to other specialists. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has been using a variety of levers, including Medicare fee schedules, to try to control diagnostic imaging expenditures in our healthcare system.
