Improving the Patient Experience and Profit Distribution in Healthcare

The difference between healthcare and any other “service” comes down to just one distinction: It is special due to its practitioners. Doctors were in what was called “the noble profession.” This moniker implied moral imperatives, ethical perfection and assiduous attention to putting patients first. As such, doctors were the stewards of healthcare. They were eclectic. They worked hard. 

However, it wasn’t lost on some entities that they were well-paid. Competing carvers of this lucrative pie entered the system. A myriad of health insurance companies, healthcare management teams and medical consulting firms employed by large healthcare networks started rearing their heads. Doctors were too ethical to fight for their own self-interest, and they lost. In my opinion, the noble profession had been relegated to a mere trade.
