Respiratory care in healthcare refers to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with conditions and diseases of the respiratory system. This includes conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, and lung cancer, as well as other respiratory disorders such as sleep apnea and cystic fibrosis.
Respiratory care is typically provided by respiratory therapists, who are trained to administer treatments such as oxygen therapy, bronchodilators, and mechanical ventilation. They also perform diagnostic tests such as spirometry and pulmonary function tests, and assess patients for signs and symptoms of respiratory distress.
Respiratory therapy also includes the management of patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) which is a severe illness which can occur as a complication of a viral infection or exposure to toxins.
Respiratory care also includes the management of patients with chronic respiratory diseases such as Asthma, COPD and Cystic Fibrosis. Respiratory care is an important part of the healthcare system, as respiratory conditions are a leading cause of illness and death worldwide.
