Standard Occupational Classification (SOC): Nursing Assistants, Orderlies, and Psychiatric Aides

Nursing assistants, orderlies, and psychiatric aides are healthcare workers who provide basic care and assistance to patients under the supervision of licensed healthcare professionals. They work in a variety of healthcare settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, and mental health facilities.

Nursing assistants (NAs) are responsible for providing basic care to patients, such as bathing, dressing, and feeding. They also take vital signs, such as blood pressure and temperature, and assist patients with mobility and other activities of daily living. NAs may also help with some medical procedures, such as taking blood samples.

Orderlies are responsible for transporting patients within a healthcare facility, such as moving patients from their beds to wheelchairs or stretchers. They also assist with other tasks, such as cleaning and stocking patient rooms, and may help with some basic patient care tasks as well.

Psychiatric aides are responsible for providing basic care to patients in mental health facilities, such as helping patients with their daily activities and providing emotional support. They may also monitor patients’ behavior and report any changes to the healthcare team.

All of these positions typically require a high school diploma or equivalent and on the job training. Some states may require certification for nursing assistants. These positions are considered entry-level positions, and these workers may advance to higher-level positions with additional education and training.
