They may work in hospitals, hospices, nursing homes, or other healthcare facilities, and may also have their own funeral home businesses.

Their duties may include embalming and preparing the body, dressing and casketing the body, and arranging for transportation of the body. They may also be responsible for obtaining death certificates, permits and other documents, and for coordinating with cemeteries or crematories. They may also be responsible for coordinating with other healthcare professionals to ensure that the process of preparing the deceased for burial or cremation and for making arrangements for funerals and memorial services is coordinated with other aspects of patient care.

They may also be responsible for providing emotional support to families and loved ones of the deceased and help them with planning and coordinating funeral services and ceremonies. They may also be responsible for providing information about grief counseling and other resources available to help families cope with their loss.
