Dentists who specialize in a particular area of dentistry are known as dental specialists. Some common types of dental specialists include:
Orthodontists: Orthodontists specialize in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial abnormalities. They use braces and other devices to straighten teeth and correct bite problems.
Endodontists: Endodontists specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of problems related to the pulp and nerves inside the tooth. They may perform root canal procedures to save teeth that are infected or damaged.
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons: Oral and maxillofacial surgeons specialize in surgery of the mouth, teeth, and facial structures. They may remove teeth, repair facial injuries, and perform other surgical procedures.
Prosthodontists: Prosthodontists specialize in the restoration and replacement of missing teeth. They may create dentures, crowns, bridges, and other dental prosthetics.
Pediatric dentists: Pediatric dentists specialize in the care of children’s teeth. They may provide preventive care, diagnose and treat dental problems, and educate children and parents about oral health.
To become a dental specialist, individuals must complete additional education and training beyond dental school. This may include a residency program or a postgraduate program in the specific area of specialization. Dental specialists must also pass a specialty exam in order to practice in their area of expertise.
