Standard Occupational Classification (SOC): Dentists

Dentists are healthcare professionals who specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of oral health issues. They are responsible for examining patients’ teeth and mouths to identify any problems, such as cavities, gum disease, or other abnormalities.

Dentists use a variety of tools and techniques to diagnose and treat dental issues, including X-rays, drills, and other specialized instruments. They may also prescribe medications to treat oral health problems or recommend preventative measures, such as fluoride treatments or dental sealants, to help patients maintain good oral health.

In addition to providing direct patient care, dentists may also be responsible for managing the business aspects of their practice, such as hiring and training staff, managing finances, and marketing their services.

To become a dentist, individuals must complete a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree program, which typically takes four years to complete. After graduating from dental school, dentists must also pass a licensing exam in order to practice. In some states, dentists may also be required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis to maintain their license.
