Mandibular prosthesis implantation is a surgical procedure in which a prosthetic device is placed in the mandible (lower jaw) to replace missing or damaged bone. The procedure is typically used to restore the function of the jaw and improve the patient’s ability to speak, eat, and chew. It is also used for cosmetic purposes to improve the appearance of the face.
The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia and may require an overnight stay in the hospital. The surgeon will make an incision in the patient’s jaw and create a space to receive the implant. Once the implant is in place, the surgeon will secure it with screws or other fixation devices. Over time, the implant will fuse with the surrounding bone, becoming a permanent part of the patient’s jaw.
After the surgery, patients will need to follow a specific post-operative instructions and will have to go through a recovery period where there will be some pain and swelling. It’s not uncommon for patients to have to follow a soft diet during this period.
Mandibular prosthesis implantation is considered a safe and effective treatment option for patients with missing or damaged jawbone. However, as with any surgical procedure, there are risks involved, such as infection, bleeding, and implant failure.
