Dental matrix bands are thin, metal bands that are used in restorative dentistry to help shape and contour filling material during the filling of cavities. They are used to separate and isolate the teeth being filled from the surrounding teeth, allowing the dentist to properly shape and contour the filling material while preventing it from spilling out onto the adjacent teeth.
Matrix bands come in various sizes and designs to fit different types of teeth and dental situations. Traditional matrix bands are made of metal, but there are also disposable plastic matrix bands available which are used to avoid cross-contamination.
Matrix bands are most commonly used in the restoration of posterior teeth (molar and premolar) with class II cavities, which are cavities that extend into the tooth’s proximal surface. They are also used in class V cavities which are cavities on the tooth’s cervical area.
Matrix bands are a common and important part of the dental filling process, as they help to ensure a precise and accurate filling that is comfortable for the patient and preserves the natural shape of the tooth.
