Periodontics is a dental specialty that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and conditions affecting the supporting structures of the teeth, including the gums, bone, and ligaments. Periodontists are dentists who have completed an additional three years of specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease.
Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is an infection of the gums and bone that support the teeth. It’s caused by bacteria found in plaque, and it can lead to tooth loss if not treated. The early stage of periodontal disease is called gingivitis, which is characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. If gingivitis is not treated, it can progress to the more severe form of the disease called periodontitis.
Periodontics treatments include:
Scaling and root planing: A deep cleaning procedure to remove plaque and tartar from the teeth and roots.
Periodontal surgery: Surgery to remove infected tissue and bone, and to repair damaged tissue in order to save the teeth.
Dental implants: A surgical procedure to place a small titanium post into the jaw to replace a missing tooth.
Gingival contouring: A cosmetic procedure to reshape the gums to improve the appearance of the smile.
Bone grafting: A procedure that replaces missing bone, which is necessary for the placement of dental implants.
Periodontics is an important area of dentistry that focuses on the maintenance and preservation of the natural dentition. It’s important to maintain good oral hygiene and to have regular dental check-ups to prevent and detect periodontal disease early. Periodontics treatments can help to prevent tooth loss, improve the appearance of the smile, and promote overall oral and systemic health.
