Occupational therapists (OTs) are healthcare professionals who help individuals achieve independence and participation in their daily activities. They work with people of all ages who have physical, cognitive, emotional, or developmental conditions that affect their ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs).
The role of occupational therapists include:
Assessing patients’ abilities and limitations in performing ADLs and IADLs
Developing individualized treatment plans to help patients improve their abilities and reach their goals
Providing therapy to help patients improve their physical and cognitive abilities, such as strength, coordination, and fine motor skills
Modifying the patient’s environment and making recommendations for adaptive equipment or assistive technology to help them perform activities more independently
Educating patients and their families about the condition and how to manage it
Collaborating with other healthcare professionals, such as physicians and physical therapists, to coordinate care and ensure patients receive the best possible outcomes
Occupational therapists work in a variety of settings including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, schools, nursing homes, home health agencies, and private practices. They help individuals of all ages and with a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to: stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, developmental delays, mental health conditions, and degenerative diseases.
Occupational therapists have a master’s or doctoral degree in occupational therapy and must be licensed to practice in the United States. They are also required to pass a certification exam and continue their education through ongoing professional development.
