Dental hygienists are licensed oral health professionals who work under the supervision of a dentist to provide preventive and therapeutic care for patients. They are responsible for cleaning teeth, taking X-rays, and educating patients on proper oral hygiene techniques. Dental hygienists also play a key role in the detection and management of oral diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis. They also assist in the application of fluoride and sealants and may provide preventive care such as screenings for oral cancer. They also take patient’s medical and dental history, and assist the dentist in providing comprehensive care.
They have an important role in oral healthcare as they are the first point of contact for many patients, and their work helps to prevent the development of more serious oral health problems.
