Audiologists in healthcare are professionals who specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of hearing and balance disorders. They hold a master’s or doctorate degree in audiology and are licensed to practice in their state.

Audiologists assess the patient’s hearing, balance and tinnitus (ringing in the ears) by conducting a series of tests, such as audiometry and tympanometry, and interpreting the results. They use this information to diagnose hearing disorders, such as sensorineural hearing loss, conductive hearing loss, and tinnitus.

They also provide hearing aid evaluations, fittings and follow-up care for those who need amplification. They also provide counseling to patients and their families about communication strategies, assistive listening devices, and hearing conservation.

Audiologists also have a key role in providing balance and vestibular rehabilitation, which is a type of therapy that helps to improve balance and reduce dizziness and vertigo caused by inner ear disorders.

Audiologists work in a variety of settings such as hospitals, clinics, private practice, schools, and research centers. They work closely with other healthcare professionals, such as otolaryngologists (ENTs) and speech-language pathologists, to provide comprehensive care to patients with hearing and balance disorders.
