Gartner: Additive Manufacturing

Additive manufacturing refers to creating a physical object from a digitally encoded design through material deposition via 3D printing. It helps overcome the constraints otherwise seen in the traditional manufacturing processes such as casting, milling, etc. Mass customization and complex geometries can be designed using this technique that was unfeasible before. It also facilitates adding new features to medical devices for better patient care in dentistry, orthopedics, and other implanting procedures.
