Timely diagnosis of sepsis, a life threatening response to infection
Sepsis is the body’s overwhelming and life-threatening response to infection that can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death. Common signs and symptoms include fever, increased heart rate, increased breathing rate, and confusion. Sepsis was the most expensive in-patient cost in American hospitals in 2014 at nearly $27 billion each year. Forty percent of patients diagnosed with severe sepsis do not survive. Up to 50% of survivors suffer from post-sepsis syndrome.
The early diagnosis of sepsis is essential for clinical intervention before it rapidly progresses beyond initial stages to more severe stages, such as severe sepsis or septic shock, associated with high mortality. Current diagnostics are limited in their ability to address this challenge giving rise to the need for new biomarker signatures that provide clinical added value in the accurate and timely diagnosis of sepsis.
