A survey conducted by Medtronic and Morning Consult reveals that 51% of U.S. adults are optimistic about the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) applications leading to major advancements in healthcare in the coming year. The survey highlights high levels of optimism, particularly in the areas of diagnoses and improving healthcare access. Sixty-one percent of adults believe that one of the main benefits of using AI in healthcare is to diagnose and detect health conditions, and 65% agree that technology can break down barriers to healthcare, with 56% specifically citing the benefits of AI in improving healthcare access.
However, there are challenges to the widespread adoption of AI in healthcare. Among those skeptical of the technology, 83% are concerned about the potential for AI to make mistakes, and 80% cite a lack of understanding and evidence of AI's positive impact on health outcomes as risks. Addressing these concerns is crucial for building consumer confidence, with 47% expressing that they would feel more assured if these obstacles were effectively addressed.
While consumers generally have a positive view of using AI to manage their health, there is hesitancy regarding extensive use by physicians. Only 36% prefer working with a physician who incorporates AI, and 20% are comfortable with the idea of their doctor extensively relying on AI. However, when presented with specific scenarios, such as AI analyzing tests, x-rays, and CT scans or detecting cancer, Americans show greater openness, with 67% and 62% expressing willingness, respectively.
The survey also notes that individuals' health status influences their receptiveness to AI, with 53% of adults in excellent health preferring working with a doctor utilizing AI compared to 29% among those in fair health. Ken Washington, Chief Technology and Innovation Officer at Medtronic, emphasizes the potential of AI in healthcare, stating that while skepticism is natural, responsible and ethical use of AI has the power to radically improve healthcare for both patients and doctors in the future.
