While many White patients don't acknowledge racism in healthcare, accurate historical lessons can change perspectives. Researchers like Kimberly Martin and Kerri Johnson conducted a study with 1,853 White participants. Those exposed to critical Black history lessons were more likely to recognize racism today. The findings highlight the importance of understanding the past injustices, promoting equality in healthcare, and combating systemic racism to create a more equitable healthcare system and society.
Learning about the history of racial discrimination in healthcare can be a potent tool to combat it in the future. A study found that up to 67% of White patients don't believe racism exists in healthcare for Black Americans. Accurate history lessons, especially for White individuals, can change this perception. Participants exposed to critical Black history were more likely to recognize racism today and support policies promoting equal access to healthcare for Black patients.
