The public's trust in nurses is the highest of any medical profession, yet there is a big gap between Americans' admiration for nursing and the profession's hazy future. High levels of moral distress, politicization, and a lack of support have been major contributors to the nursing shortage that has been made worse by the COVID pandemic. According to the most recent U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, if the problem is not addressed, the country would face a catastrophic shortage of over 200,000 nurses in a short period of time.
