Biden Administration unveils its 4-pillar national cyber workforce strategy
The White House unveiled a new National Cyber Workforce and Education Strategy (NCWES) to encourage skilled cybersecurity professionals in healthcare and other industries. The strategy aims to communicate the benefits of careers in public service, lower barriers to hiring and onboarding, and equip every American with foundational cybersecurity skills. It seeks to transform cyber education, expand and enhance the national cyber workforce, and strengthen the federal cyber workforce.
The NCWES will coordinate efforts across federal agencies and explore ways to integrate cybersecurity into various educational programs, from K-12 to college courses and employer-led training. The goal is to have everyone understand their role in cyberspace, including protecting sensitive data in sectors like healthcare.
To achieve this, the strategy outlines a path to move federal hiring to a skills-based system, implementing strategies like bringing in secondary students as cyber interns and increasing paid internships. It also prioritizes investments in "disinvested communities" to improve cyber education and opportunities in underserved areas.
The new workforce efforts align with the Biden Administration's National Cybersecurity Strategy and aim to address historic issues with equity and inclusion while enhancing digital resilience. Partnerships with state and local governments are considered critical for successful implementation.
The strategy launch event also highlighted the importance of lifelong learning, as both the government and the Department of Defense recognize the need to foster ongoing technical training on the job to maintain a robust cyber workforce.
In conclusion, the NCWES is a crucial step to strengthen the nation's cyber defenses, grow the cyber workforce, and promote diversity and inclusivity in the field. It emphasizes collaboration between the government, industry, and educational institutions to meet the challenges posed by an increasingly digital society.
