PPI (patient and public involvement) is increasingly regularly stated as a moral imperative in obligatory laws spanning a range of disciplines, including healthcare design and delivery, legislation, education, and—possibly more recently—digital health innovation. While there is not yet agreement on what to call PPI, its potential benefits, such as improved relevance, quality, and authenticity production of alternative and new ideas stakeholder empowerment emancipation democratization, and increased sustainability, are widely accepted. Though widely acknowledged, the significance of actively integrating patients and the public in digital health innovation is sometimes misunderstood. As a result, the objective of this analysis was to investigate the ways in which patients and the general public are involved in digital health innovation and to pinpoint the elements that both encourage and discourage effective patient and public involvement (PPI).
