When combined with simulation Virtual Reality is increasingly being used for training and education; immersing clinicians in a realistic simulation of a procedure and practising the steps and techniques is now being seen as an effective and relatively low cost way of improving skills and educating clinicians.

Leadership Beyond the Operating Room for Early Career Surgeons is a new course designed to help develop the next generation of leaders in the profession. Cardiothoracic surgeons who are in their first 8 years of practice (academic or private practice) are invited to participate and learn about core leadership skills that are imperative for success in an ever-changing health care environment.

This interactive afternoon course will focus on three core areas managing people, managing finances, and managing yourself. Each topic area will include brief lectures from STS surgeon leaders and invited experts, followed by small group discussions of case studies and then a full group discussion. Surgeon mentors will be placed strategically in each of the groups. At the conclusion of the course, attendees are invited to stay for a special networking reception.

The STS Coding Workshop is designed to provide cardiothoracic surgery coders, surgeons, and all billing professionals with the latest coding and reimbursement updates affecting surgical practices. Sessions will be presented using scenario-based questions, challenging coding examples, attendee interaction, and extensive Q&A.

This 2-day, Friday-Saturday educational event will cover new and revised codes specific to cardiothoracic surgery, with concentrations in adult cardiac surgery, congenital heart surgery, general thoracic surgery, and vascular surgery. The program also will focus on reimbursement issues affecting the specialty as a whole. The Workshop will conclude with a special session on the physician’s role in documentation and reimbursement.
