It is clear from the NHS Long Term Plan that digital transformation remains a key priority… The focus is now on ensuring that everyone that needs to access information can do so using digital means in every location in which they need it. Medicines has been identified as a priority for this in every survey conducted over the last few years in every care sector… In hospitals this is being enabled by accelerating the use of ePrescribing systems. The use of more mature functionality to support improved prescribing and medicines administration is also underway with the global digital exemplar sites. The first sites to undertake closed loop medicines administration are now live and key interfaces to other systems are in development.

This is annual Core Urology course at Guy's Urology for those undergoing national selection in March 2020.

The provisional programme includes:

• Monday 27th January AM session - Lectures on topics across urology from Consultants
• Monday 27th January PM session - Simulation lab for practice on practical station
• Tuesday 28th January AM session - Lectures on topics across urology from Consultants
• Tuesday 28th January PM session - "The Mock Interview"

There will be plenty of time to practice on the simulation equipment (SPC, stent insertion, flexible cystoscopy, rigid cystoscopy and more)

We have excellent feedback from previous years, with the top scorer attending the course: previous top scorers will be teaching as well!

Preference will be given to clinical fellows/CT2s with limited capacity and the cost of course will be £80. We are awaiting confirmation of sponsorship for lunch.

Virtual Reality in healthcare is now being used routinely to improve care for patients. When combined with simulation Virtual Reality is increasingly being used for training and education; immersing clinicians in a realistic simulation of a procedure and practising the steps and techniques is now being seen as an effective and relatively low cost way of improving skills and educating clinicians.

Chaired and produced in association with Mr Bibhas Roy, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Central Manchester University Hospital NHS Trust, this Virtual Reality and Simulation Summit focuses on the practical application of these techniques in everyday clinical practice, this is not a futuristic theory based event but includes practical case studies of how this technology is being used today to improve practice.

Leadership Beyond the Operating Room for Early Career Surgeons is a new course designed to help develop the next generation of leaders in the profession. Cardiothoracic surgeons who are in their first 8 years of practice (academic or private practice) are invited to participate and learn about core leadership skills that are imperative for success in an ever-changing health care environment.

This interactive afternoon course will focus on three core areas managing people, managing finances, and managing yourself. Each topic area will include brief lectures from STS surgeon leaders and invited experts, followed by small group discussions of case studies and then a full group discussion. Surgeon mentors will be placed strategically in each of the groups. At the conclusion of the course, attendees are invited to stay for a special networking reception.

The STS Coding Workshop is designed to provide cardiothoracic surgery coders, surgeons, and all billing professionals with the latest coding and reimbursement updates affecting surgical practices. Sessions will be presented using scenario-based questions, challenging coding examples, attendee interaction, and extensive Q&A.

This 2-day, Friday-Saturday educational event will cover new and revised codes specific to cardiothoracic surgery, with concentrations in adult cardiac surgery, congenital heart surgery, general thoracic surgery, and vascular surgery. The program also will focus on reimbursement issues affecting the specialty as a whole. The Workshop will conclude with a special session on the physician’s role in documentation and reimbursement. Additionally, participants will have access to a series of supplemental online modules covering the global surgical period, modifiers, bundling, diagnosis, and coverage considerations to enhance their coding knowledge before and after the Workshop.
