The American Cancer Society estimates there are currently 16 million Americans who are cancer survivors. Because of improved detection and treatment, nearly 70% of patients with a cancer diagnosis will go on to live their full life expectancy. Cancer treatments however are not without peril as the side effects of surgery; chemotherapy and radiotherapy have a deleterious impact on function in a majority of patients. These side effects may occur in both the short and long term and many persist over the remaining lifetime of the patient. With escalating numbers of survivors, we also see escalating functional limitations and disability in the survivorship population necessitating a greater focus on cancer by the rehabilitation community.
