Technologies Transforming Informed Consent In Healthcare
Informed consent is a fundamental component of modern healthcare and represents a patient's right to understand and agree to a medical procedure, treatment or study. True informed consent empowers patients to be part of the decision-making process and be aware of risks and alternatives.Despite its importance, research has shown that patients often fail to fully comprehend the complexities of their medical conditions, planned course of action and the associated risks, leading to a poor understanding of what they are consenting to.But I see recent advancements in technology—particularly experiential reality (XR), which is a broader name for virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and other enabling technologies—transforming how healthcare professionals bridge the gap in patient understanding.
