Telemedicine is expected to experience high growth in the coming years. By some estimates, the U.S. telemedicine market size will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 16.2%, hitting $160.45 billion by 2034. A U.S. Chamber of Commerce article said the use of technologies like machine learning and predictive analytics will enable telemedicine to become more accessible while improving healthcare and lowering costs. However, to ensure growth, there are key aspects of telemedicine that still need improvement: eliminating regulatory barriers, achieving reimbursement parity, better technical interoperability, more data-based performance analysis and expanded specialty care.Licensing regulations are often a barrier to physicians wanting to effectively administer care to patients via telemedicine. Physicians are generally required to obtain a license in the state in which their patient resides.
Interoperability standards are a work in progress across the U.S. as hospital systems tackle the challenges of integrating legacy systems with modern telemedicine platforms and eliminating data silos. The Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) standards developed by Health Level Seven International are designed to enable healthcare systems to share data with one another and enable better patient care.FHIR has been implemented by some large institutions, but for smaller systems in rural communities, there often remain obstacles related to budgets for technology investments and staff members having the skills to implement and manage compliant data sharing.
