Inside Google's Plans To Fix Healthcare With Generative AI
At the conclusion of each hospital shift, the outgoing nurse faces the task of swiftly acquainting the incoming nurse with the status of all patients under their care. This information exchange, commonly referred to as "handoff," can manifest through various means, such as verbal conversations, handwritten notes, or electronic medical records. Recognizing the potential for applying generative artificial intelligence to streamline this process, Schlosser and his team at HCA, a prominent healthcare system with 180 hospitals serving approximately 37 million patients annually, embarked on a quest for suitable solutions. Remarkably, their search yielded no companies specializing in addressing this specific handoff challenge. Capitalizing on their existing partnership with Google Cloud, HCA turned to Google's Vertex AI, a comprehensive software suite facilitating the development and deployment of machine learning models. Although Google offers its foundational model, PaLM, the platform remains model-agnostic, allowing customers to integrate and leverage various models.

At the conclusion of each hospital shift, nurses must efficiently convey patient information during a "handoff." This process employs verbal, written, or electronic methods. HCA, a major healthcare system, identified the potential for AI application in this context. Despite an exhaustive search, no specialized solutions were found. Leveraging their Google Cloud partnership, HCA adopted Vertex AI, an adaptable platform for machine learning model development, complemented by Google's foundational PaLM model.
