Ambient AI Is Having Its ‘Moment’ In Healthcare
Ambient intelligence, or ambient AI, has increasingly become more pervasive across industries and especially become more relevant in healthcare. Ambient AI leverages technology and computing to detect, react and generate insights based upon the mere presence of people. That is, rather than users actively engaging in queries or driving actions, these systems are automatically triggered and engage in their tasks autonomously. The most common example of this in the modern technology landscape is the internet of things (IoT), which entails everything from smart accessories that a person can wear to smart devices often found around the home. In the healthcare setting, these devices have massive potential for impact. For example, a smart watch may automatically detect when a user’s heart rate is elevated and send notifications accordingly so that the user is warned.

Ambient AI in the clinical workflow is also progressing rapidly. One of the primary examples that has gained immense popularity in recent years is ambient dictation technology, which aims to listen in the background to a physician-patient conversation and transcribe it into a note so that a physician can then review and finalize it. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) indicated that providers spend nearly 1.77 hours outside of regular office hours to complete documentation tasks. Other studies have found that documentation tasks are among the highest cited reasons for clinician burnout and attrition. Now, with ambient dictation, although these tasks are not eliminated completely, they are significantly eased.
