As a medical doctor and healthcare technologist with over a decade of experience, I’ve seen a common mistake among healthtech innovators: focusing solely on the disease to improve outcomes. While important, disease is just the tip of the iceberg. Beneath it lies a deeper, often overlooked factor: social determinants of health (SDoH). SDoH—such as income, education and housing—profoundly impact health outcomes.Yet, collecting and utilizing this data remains a challenge. This is where artificial intelligence (AI) can be a game changer. AI has the potential to analyze SDoH data, identify patterns and create targeted interventions, enabling a more holistic approach to healthcare. For the next wave of healthtech entrepreneurs, the key is clear: Look beyond the disease. By embracing SDoH and leveraging AI, we can build a future of proactive, equitable healthcare.
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines SDoH as “the non-medical factors that influence health outcomes.” Research shows that up to 80% of health outcomes are influenced by SDoH, while clinical care accounts for only 10%-20%. For example, individuals in low-income neighborhoods may face barriers such as limited access to healthcare facilities, poor housing conditions and food deserts, all of which contribute to poorer health outcomes.
