Why COPD is a Perfect Target for RPM

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the most common and debilitating respiratory diseases patients face. COPD, which impacts nearly 16 million Americans and is the third leading cause of death worldwide, can be challenging to manage if not treated early and effectively. These patients have obstructive airways, which means they struggle to exhale productively. This leads to baseline shortness of breath, as well as periods of acute worsening, termed exacerbations. Exacerbations reduce quality of life and further accelerate the decline in lung function. Treatment of exacerbations with oral medications is often effective, especially when started promptly. While patients with exacerbations of COPD present with worsening shortness of breath, cough, and congestion, the symptoms may not be immediately recognized by the patient, leading to delays in treatment. Doctors spend time educating patients on their symptoms and when to seek care. Despite this, the challenge of treating exacerbations early enough to minimize adverse outcomes, such as hospitalizations, remains.

Remote patient monitoring (RPM), which digitally monitors patients’ physiology, offers promise in the identification of COPD exacerbations. Respiratory RPM often focuses on the respiratory rate which can be elevated early in the course of an exacerbation. By using sensitive algorithms to monitor changes in a patient’s breathing, practices can now proactively contact and treat them prior to more serious symptoms developing. From a patient standpoint, it’s not surprising that most individuals with chronic health issues want to live their best lives at home, where they remain independent and active. The combination of technology, effective therapeutics, and the engagement of clinicians are all powerful drivers of effective outpatient care for any patient population.
