Study finds virtual care cuts avoidable rehospitalizations by 33 percent
Virtual oversight can help clinical staff in nursing homes provide better care to residents and reduce avoidable hospitalizations, according to a new qualitative study of novel nurse-driven virtual care models. The study found that the OPTIMISTIC program reduced potential avoidable hospitalizations by 33% overall and overall hospitalizations of nursing home residents by 20%. The study noted that, while estimates vary, as much as 67% of hospitalizations of nursing homes residents are avoidable. States spend between $47 million and $224 million each year on avoidable hospitalizations, but many interventions are “time-intensive and require dedicated clinical staff, when nursing homes are chronically understaffed,” the study authors noted.

A recent qualitative study has highlighted the benefits of virtual oversight in nursing homes, demonstrating that it can enhance the quality of care provided to residents while reducing avoidable hospitalizations. The study examined novel nurse-driven virtual care models, specifically focusing on the OPTIMISTIC program. The findings revealed a remarkable 33% reduction in potential avoidable hospitalizations and an overall 20% decrease in hospitalizations among nursing home residents. The study also shed light on the concerning statistic that up to 67% of hospitalizations for nursing home residents could be avoided. These avoidable hospitalizations cost states anywhere from $47 million to $224 million annually, but implementing effective interventions remains challenging due to chronic understaffing in nursing homes.
