Telehealth Improves Patient Access to Multidisciplinary Care
The 2024 Crohn’s & Colitis Congress highlighted the use of telehealth to enhance multidisciplinary care for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Presentations emphasized the effectiveness of telehealth in supporting patient retention and follow-up care at a tertiary IBD center, particularly during the post-COVID period. Dr. Jeffrey Olson and colleagues reported improved patient return rates with telehealth post-pandemic. Additionally, a pilot study led by Dr. Ayanna Lewis demonstrated successful delivery of interdisciplinary care to newly diagnosed IBD patients via telemedicine. This approach facilitated access to specialized healthcare professionals, including physicians, nutritionists, pharmacists, and social workers, overcoming barriers to care for underserved populations. Overall, telehealth emerged as a valuable tool for optimizing IBD management and promoting health equity through enhanced access to multidisciplinary care.
