Virtual Care Model Aims to Provide Clinical Support in Nursing Homes
In pursuit of bolstering clinical support in nursing homes, Regenstrief Institute researchers initiated a pilot study to develop a virtual application of OPTIMISTIC, a successful in-person model aimed at optimizing workflow in nursing facilities. The growing nursing home population coupled with workforce shortages necessitates innovative solutions. Despite the prevalence of virtual care resources, nursing home staff underutilize them for resident care. To address this gap, researchers virtually piloted the OPTIMISTIC care model, which stands for Optimizing Patient Transfers, Impacting Medical quality, and Improving Symptoms: Transforming Institutional Care. The program's history includes a 33 percent reduction in potentially avoidable hospitalizations and a 20 percent decrease in overall hospitalizations among nursing home residents, showcasing its efficacy.
